The TaalKraal Manifesto

A statement of intent for a peer-driven professional community.

We are South African and African language practitioners – translators, editors, proofreaders, reviewers, writers – scattered across geographies, specialisations and languages.

For too long, many of us have worked in isolation, often underpaid and undervalued, with no shared home to gather, learn or be heard.

The TaalKraal exists to change that.

We are building a collective space – not a gatekept institution or a status symbol, but a genuine community where we support each other, grow together and stand stronger as a network than we ever could alone.

Here, we:

  • Share knowledge without ego
  • Offer help without judgment
  • Exchange work when we have overflow or need backup
  • Talk openly about rates, tools, challenges and solutions
  • Stand up for ethical practices, fair pay and respect – especially as AI reshapes our roles
  • Protect ourselves, our languages, our industry and each other

We are not here to compete, but to connect. To hold space for one another. To raise the bar for our work and the visibility of our profession.
